Wide bandwidth dual acoustic gravitational wave detectors

چکیده

In a “dual” detector a wideband sensitivity is obtained by measuring the differential displacement, driven by the gw wave, of the facing surfaces of two nested massive bodies mechanically resonating at different frequencies. By the use of the recently proposed “selective readout” scheme, capable of specifically selecting the signal contributed by the vibrational modes sensitive to the gravitational waves, a flat spectral strain sensitivity could be obtained. In the case of a 3 m diameter Silicon Carbide dual cylinder, the sensitivity expected at the standard quantum limit is better than 10−23 Hz−1/2 in the wide frequency interval 1-4 kHz.

Demonstration of detuned dual recycling at the Garching 30 m laser interferometer

Dual recycling is an advanced optical technique to enhance the signal-to-noise ratio of laser interferometric gravitational wave detectors in a limited bandwidth. To optimise the center of this band with respect to Fourier frequencies of expected gravitational wave signals, detuned dual recycling has to be implemented. We have demonstrated detuned dual recycling on a fully suspended 30 m protot...

Recycling in laser-interferometric gravitational-wave detectors.

Laser interferometers may detect gravitational waves by sensing the strain in space produced by their passage. The resultant change in intensity of an interference fringe must be observable against a background noise due to the statistical fluctuations in the number of detected photons. Optimization of the detector sensitivity thus involves devising an optical system which both maximizes the si...

Linewidth-broadened Fabry–Perot cavities within future gravitational wave detectors

The bandwidth of LIGO-like terrestrial interferometric gravitational wave detectors is set by the pole of the Fabry–Perot cavities within the arms of the Michelson interferometer. This constraint arises because the gain of gravitational wave-induced signal sidebands is limited to frequencies within the linewidth of the cavities. The nature of standard Fabry–Perot cavities is such that one canno...

Sensing and control in dual-recycling laser interferometer gravitational-wave detectors.

We introduce length-sensing and control schemes for the dual-recycled cavity-enhanced Michelson interferometer configuration proposed for the Advanced Laser Interferometer Gravitational Wave Observatory (LIGO). We discuss the principles of this scheme and show methods that allow sensing and control signals to be derived. Experimental verification was carried out in three benchtop experiments th...
